About the project

On one day Clovelly Road in Sydney was made over - with 20% more greenery, slower traffic, tables and chairs, art and life. The idea being to demonstrate the potential of a city street and build momentum toward permanent changes.
Clovelly Road Better Block is about making a local city street greener, safer and human - by adding trees, slower traffic, tables, chairs, art and more life.

On 27 October 2013 we held a one day demonstration event. The goal of the event was to bring the community together and encourage everyone to re-imagine and realise the potential of the street.

Other aims were to:
- invite the community to add their ideas
- show civic leaders the need for action
- build momentum for permanent change
- inspire others to re-imagine and get involved in improving their street.

This was the first Better Block in Sydney. There's been 40 in the US.

The event was on Clovelly Road - toward the ocean end - in the shopping strip between/near Arden and Beach Streets.

About 3000 people attended the event. There was an incredibly positive vibe on the day - from the time the truck turned up with the trees and plants. The introduction of hundreds of small plants and eight 4 metre high trees really surprised and delighted people and created a wonderful atmosphere.

What was there before was about 95% concrete and bitumen and 5% green. For one day we increased the green to almost 25%.

We ran market research on the day to ask people for their feedback. Anecdotally there was almost universal support for the introduction of more greenery. We will be analysing the findings properly in the weeks to come and going back to Randwick Council with the results.

The immediate aim of our demonstration event was to gauge community support for more greenery and build momentum for more permanent changes. Our proposal to Council from here will likely be to trial adding some sections of greenery to the street for longer periods. And to then gradually add more sections of greenery over the years to come.

Our big vision for the next 10 years is to build a green corridor from Centennial Park to the Pacific Ocean - all the way down Clovelly Road. So we end up with an iconic street that inspires other communities and places to do the same.
