About the project
HASSELL is delivering the public domain for Sydney’s new 20-hectare integrated, convention, exhibition and entertainment precinct at Darling Harbour.
The precinct will feature an extensive seven hectares of public parklands and open space with better connections, event areas, and enhanced gathering and meeting places. A central boulevard will provide an active north-south pedestrian route to draw people through the precinct, and new east-west access will reintegrate Darling Harbour with Pyrmont, Ultimo, The Haymarket and their popular attractions.
The region’s historic vegetation communities and existing geologies are a key design driver and will be reflected through the interpretation of natural history in the precinct. The original vegetation is defining the horticultural constraints for the site and has been used to establish a framework for species selection and location.
Over 650 new trees and some 9,000 square metres of green space are proposed including the expansion of Tumbalong Park, a terraced landscape of native species stretching for more than 100 metres, and an expansive green roof of native coastal heath.
The need for potable irrigation water will be managed through the selection of drought tolerant species, unique soil composites and the integration of permeable paving, tree pit zones, and overland flow towards planting zones.
Construction of the precinct is due to commence shortly. It is scheduled for completion in 2016.
