QUEENSLAND LAUNCHING A PLAN FOR THE FUTURE

1 November 2018

A representative from the 202020 Vision team will be attending the upcoming launch of the landmark Biodiversity and Ecosystems Climate Adaption Plan (B&E CAP) for Queensland, by the Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef, Minister for Science, and Minister for the Arts, the Honourable Leeanne Enoch MP.

Queensland is facing a future of increasing biodiversity loss and decline in ecosystem integrity and function. Contributing to this issue are climate factors such as human-induced changes in temperature and rainfall, and scenarios of increasing extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, fires, cyclones and floods.

The B&E CAP aims to lay the groundwork for a more collaborative approach to problem-solving, planning and implementing actions by governments, the private sector and the broader public. Our team will be attending under our metropolitan greening stream of work that is intended to facilitate the development of a metro urban forestry policy in each of the programs key states.

While Queensland currently enjoys the largest canopy cover percentage in Australia, it is also suffering from the challenges of rapid infill and greenfield development which is causing dramatic canopy losses. We are looking forward to contributing to the discussion in light of these losses, as well as the current drought situation and as we kick off what is set to be another scorching summer.
