NATIONAL PRESS ON HEAT AND CANOPY COVERAGE

3 April 2019

In March, the team successfully secured three nationally-syndicated Fairfax stories for the 202020 Vision. The first piece unpacked why aged care facilities and retirement homes should consider greening to protect vulnerable residents from extreme heat, featuring expert commentary from 202020 Vision advocate Dr Tony Mathews. The story appeared in The Canberra Times, WA Today, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Brisbane Times and The Age, as well as a separate piece in Brisbane Seniors.

The second story detailed canopy cover loss in Canberra, with reference to the WSALTG report and commentary from 202020 Vision advocate Marco Amati – also appearing nationally across the Fairfax network. Across these two sets of coverage, there was a potential reach of 3 million people.

The third piece was secured for Plant Life Balance, once again across the Fairfax online network. The article, titled 'How many indoor plants do you really need? There's an app for that', was developed from a list of Places curated by the team from the Plant Life Balance Places catalogue. The article was led by the app and the science, resulting in a strong piece of PR for Plant Life Balance campaign.

Mellissa Bradley from Water Sensitive Cities SA also discussed 202020 Vision and the benefits of canopy cover in an interview with 101.5 Radio Adelaide, and in a panel discussion with gardening expert Sabrina Hahn, City of Armadale Manager of Park Services Paul Lanternier, and RMIT Associate Professor and 202020 Vision advocate Marco Amati.
