About the project

The New Australian Red Cross Blood Service Processing Centre reclaims a generous amount of internal and rooftop floor space as green zones, which benefits all who work there.
Through a site that has been entirely covered in concrete for its industrial life, the opportunity to introduce greenery as part of a building retrofit was relished by Outlines, the Landscape Architects for the project. The New Australian Red Cross Blood Service Processing Centre reclaims a generous amount of internal and rooftop floor space for planting, which will benefit visitors and employees alike.

An intricate mix of species now provides a lush visual break in the building’s core while allowing daylight to penetrate to adjacent areas. Balconies, bridges and decks are highly transparent to ensure the view of greenery from inside. Additionally, the innovative re-use of remnant car park ramps within the existing building structure allowed for additional plant life. Paired with one of the main vertical circulation routes, this space welcomes informal gatherings and exchanges.

This project won the 2012 Interior Design Excellence Award in ‘Sustainability’ for the aArchitects, DesignInc. It was also Highly Commended in the same awards in the 'Workplace over 1000m2' category.
