About the project

An urban forest will be planted over approximately 1ha of Fawkner Park, more than doubling the existing canopy cover and creating several ‘mini-forests’ with connecting canopies within the park.
In October, an urban forest will be planted over approximately 1ha of Fawkner Park, more than doubling the existing canopy cover and creating several ‘mini-forests’ with connecting canopies within the park.

Each planting area has a unique theme spanning Eucalypt Woodland, Gondwanan Planting, Oak Lawn and Pine Forest that will both enhance urban forest diversity and create a diverse urban forest experience for people. The increased canopy cover will create a cool, shady and serene forest refuge within the park.

This concept is unique within the City of Melbourne's park system. Originally proposed by a South Yarra resident, the development has only been made possible thanks to a collaborative effort by the City of Melbourne and the local community with a number of trees planted by children from South Yarra Primary School.

The project forms part of the broader Urban Forest Strategy, which provides ongoing inspiration for public consultation and positive green space development.
