About the project

As part of implementing their Urban Forest Strategy this year, the City of Melbourne will be planting 3,000 new trees around the municipality to increase canopy cover.
As part of implementing their Urban Forest Strategy this year, the City of Melbourne will be planting 3,000 new trees around the municipality to increase canopy cover.

Drummond St Carlton was an important part of this program, especially due to a distinct lack of trees as part of its footpaths.

Upon consultation with local residents and businesses, who were overwhelmingly supportive of the initiative, two species were nominated as community favourites; the Maidenhair tree (Gingko biloba) and Japanese Zelkova (Zelkova Serrata).

Planting finished up in September 2013, and once established these trees will not only look magnificent they will provide much needed shade and cooling to reduce urban heat effects.
