About the project

The City of Fremantle has teamed up with Curtin University to create two new green walls and prove their benefits.
The City of Fremantle has teamed up with Curtin University Sustainable Policy Institute to create two new green walls and prove their benefits.

The instillations in Westgate Mall and Cantonment Street, will be monitored by students from the University of Western Australia and Murdoch University.

The trial, which runs for a year across all four seasons, will evaluate the feasibility of green walls in the community and analyse the social and scientific benefits which the structures can provide.

A selection of plants have been specially chosen to withstand the often harsh Fremantle weather.

The goal is to tackle the challenges of hot and dry Perth climate, while making Fremantle City a greener and more beautiful place.

Once the trial is complete the data will be used to assess opportunities for further applications of green walls and rooftop gardens around the city.
