About the project

Sydney Ports Coporation required the expansion of its existing Port Botany facility to handle increases in container trade servicing Sydney's growing consumer market and the NSW economy.
AECOM has provided detailed design and contract management services for a major upgrade of the Foreshore Beach and Penrhyn Estuary adjacent to the port facilities. The upgrade includes the environmental restoration of the existing beach and dunes, provision of recreational infrastructure (pathways, pedestrian overpass, lookouts and amenities building), a new boat ramp with car parking and fish cleaning facilities, and the development of educational and interpretation strategies linked to the heritage and ecological values of the site.
This project has incorporated significant sustainable design approaches beyong the stabilisation of the foreshore dune system and creation of an expanded intertidal estuary and adjacent saltmarsh zone. The design of the built elements and signage reinforces the message of sustainable coexistence by referencing both the important environmental values of the place along with explaining the functioning and role of the Port.
