About the project

The Cumberland Plain Forest once covered 30% of the Sydney Basin and now covers just 6%. Progressive urban infill, clearing and tree decline has reduced this ecosystem to a much smaller area than before. Western Sydney University is conducting a massive experiment - the first of its kind in the world - to understand how rapidly increasing CO2 levels will affect Australian forests and the communities that live in them. With six enormous steel rings, we are creating an environment that exposes a natural forest to 550ppm CO2, predicted to occur within fifty years. Our experiments also include twelve tree-sized Climate Chambers and many other world-first facilities to understand how real-world Australian ecosystems will respond to elevated CO2 and the effects it brings.
