About the project

Medibank Place is a new living, breathing workplace building that’s enlivening Melbourne’s Docklands.
Medibank has established one of the healthiest urban workplaces in the world. Designed by HASSELL, the new living, breathing building is enabling Australia’s largest health insurer to live its purpose to the core, and create better health outcomes for its members, employees and the community.

A highly collaborative design process led to bold hybridisations of landscape and architecture at Medibank Place. The innovative design allows Medibank employees to choose how and where they work, with settings ranging from indoor quiet spaces and collaborative hubs to wifi-enabled balconies and places to stand and work.

Both the building and the workplace incorporate an enormous number of plants. Within the workplace this improves internal air quality and transforms views from grey to green, helping to relieve employee stress and boost productivity. And with around 10 per cent of the exterior covered by a mix of native Australian and exotic plants, the building also provides welcome relief to the precinct’s heavily concreted surrounds.

The development has introduced more than 10,000 plants to Melbourne’s Docklands precinct, including: 140 trees; 520 modular planters sustaining climbing plants on the building façade; over 400 sqm of green wall; and 675 sqm of planted terraces distributed across the tower where the glazing line is set back. The green façade and walls were designed in collaboration with Fytogreen to overcome the site’s specific challenges of water supply and drainage, wind mitigation, microclimate zoning, plant installation and maintenance.

At concourse level, the development incorporates a 3,500 sqm urban park, with a sports court, edible garden, outdoor workspaces and an events amphitheatre.

More than just a building, Medibank Place gives back to its surrounding community by creating a welcoming new green gateway to the Docklands, with an improved network of pedestrian links and enhanced public spaces.
