About the project

The revitalisation of the former South Sydney Hospital site sees the Matron Ruby Grant Park (MRGP) as the green heart of the Green Square Community and Cultural Precinct. A Hospital Campus landscape setting links the adapted heritage buildings, facilitating a flexible program of activities for individuals and groups aspired by the community. The MRGP performs on a cultural and ecological level, offering residents of the dense urban precinct access to generous green spaces framed by a series of bespoke furniture elements with planting derived from Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub EEC that once flourished among the swamps on and around the site. The park palette includes heritage interpretation elements, stormwater infiltration basins, a commemorative fountain sculpture, community garden plots and a sculpted berm in the main lawn providing elevated views to live shows held in Peter Stutchbury Architecture’s ‘outdoor room’.
